What is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist is a health care professional with university training specifically in the assessment, diagnosing and management of problems affecting the foot, ankle and lower limb. Services offered include:

  • Sports injury assessment and management
  • Bone and joint disorders, such as stress fractures, bunions and arthritis.
  • Soft tissue (muscle and tendon) conditons including heel pain, tendonitis and muscle strains.

What happens in podiatry assessments and treatment?

Once your sports podiatrist has determined the cause of your injury, through your medical history, static and dynamic evaluation of motion and strength will be performed, and your posture during walking, running and sports-specific activities.

Do you require a referral for podiatry?

Doctor referrals are only necessary for Veterans Affairs (DVA) clients and Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) treatments (please consult your doctor to determine if you are eligible for a Medicare rebate).

Introducing Luke Mason – Sports Podiatrist

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Health Sciences / Master of Podiatry.

Luke is currently completing a Masters of Applied Science (Research), in which he is investigating the effects of non-surgical and surgical treatments of foot osteoarthritis and reduced pain and improved lower limb function. Luke is currently in conducting a systematic review, to identify the best treatments available for foot osteoarthritis.

He is an accredited member of the Australian Podiatry Association (APODA), Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) and Australian Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM).

Experience:

Luke has experience working with amateur athletes and has performed numerous observations within elite sports clubs. He has experience with a plethora of lower limb injuries but has a special interest in plantar heel pain, shin splints and Achilles tendinopathy. Luke has strong passion for sports injuries and wishes to be a consultant podiatrist to elite sporting clubs in the future.
